Cachaça is a spirit drink produced from freshly harvested sugar cane. This is in contrast to rum, which is usually made with cane sugar molasses. The traditional country of origin of cachaça is Brazil and the name is a protected designation of origin there. Around 600 different types of sugar cane can be used in its production. Cachaça is either industrially or traditionally produced. Although cachaça is actually the higher quality distillate compared to rum, Brazil's national liquor is known in Europe at best as the main ingredient of caipirinha.
