A liqueur is a sweet, flavoured alcoholic beverage with a minimum sugar content of 100 grams per litre and an alcohol content of at least 15%. Liqueurs used to be regarded as medicinal drinks, which were produced in the Middle Ages behind monastery walls according to strictly guarded recipes. The first liqueur was produced in the 13th century by the Catalan Dr. Arnoldus Villanovanus. To make the various plant and herbal extracts, which he believed had healing properties, more enjoyable, he added honey as a sweetener and refined them with various aromas. He named his "compositions" after the Latin word for liquid - "liquor", from which the modern word liqueur is derived.
